Sharpshooters 1945-1949
For 18 months after VE Day, the Sharpshooters lived the life of a peacetime regular regiment as part of the BAOR (British Army of the Rhine), one of the very few TA Regiments kept on in this way. It was not until Sept 1946 that they were ordered to be disbanded.
In 1947 however the occupation of much of Eastern Europe by the Soviets saw the start of the Cold War. One immediate effect was the restoration of the Territorial Army.
Also, in Jan 1949, National Service was reintroduced with an obligation of men of 18 to serve 2 years with the regular army and 3 years on the reserve.
